5 Ways To Eat Poetry

... Well, not really.

But I have found that kids love good poetry and Australian poetry (as a totally unbiased view) is the best.

One of my many favourite poets is Andrew Barton (AB) Paterson AND one of my favourite poems of his is

The GEEBUNG POLO CLUB.

How to teach kids to Eat Poetry...

  1. LIVE THE POEM through art - draw scenes, produce a diorama of parts of the poem, enact scenes.Do it in LITTLE BITS so you don't choke.
  2. Allow children the chance to MEMORISE & PERFORM parts of the play to each other, their friends, the class, other classes.
  3. KNOW THE POET. Poems are the reflection of the poet and when the children empathise with the poet they will relate better with the poetry.
  4. DON'T RUSH. Take your time. Poetry is best eaten slowly to enjoy the texture and the flavour.
