Hi! You are VISITOR number

Five things relief teachers do WRONG

A teacher's job is never easy. Nor is Relief Teaching. But let's face it. Some just get it plain WRONG!

And these are the mistakes I've made and have seen plenty others make.

1. Too heavy - Too early.
Have you ever snarled at a dog. He snarls back. Kids don't respond to snarling unless they deserve it. And they usually know when they deserve it. Remember you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

2. Too light - Too early.
Sugary sweet is sickening and always leaves a funny taste in your mouth. Be sincere but don't go overboard. Not everyone can be Mary Poppins. You're a teacher - not a friend. And kids no when you are faking it.

3. Not knowing.
You are a teacher - you know everything. Kids expect you to know everything. If you are indecisive - and they will eat you. Be prepared before you arrive. Kids will forgive if you make a mistake but they won't forgive if you don't make a decision.

4. Not picking the turkeys.
Be astute and proactive. Kids respond to proximity. Watch the interaction as kids enter the room. You'll see the turkeys - so set about keeping them focussed with activity. Stay close. Just a little wink or nod will let them know that you are on to their game.

5. Not caring.
You have a important job to do, so take your responsibility seriously. Set a standard and don't give. Expect a standard and a compliance.
